In the event that a disciple (of any Guardian) is interested in petitioning the Allmother to unseat the Guardian of any Crystal, they may do so without viable motive or cause. A disciple's reasoning can be as simple as a lust for power, or as complex as grief or betrayal.
To initiate a challenge, there are some steps that must first be taken in order for the challenge to be considered viable by staff. Please read closely, and don't hesitate to DM a staff member if you have any questions.
To initiate a challenge...
- Firstly, you as a player must compile a list of IC reasons that this character should be unseated as a Guardian. These do NOT need to be reasons that your character is aware of. Present these reasons to staff via Private Message to the Mythwriter account using Folklore's PM system. This should NOT be sent to an indivdual on Discord.
- Staff will review the reasons given. A minimum of 5 reasons presented by the player interested in beginning the challenge must be deemed viable by staff.
- If 5 reasons are found in the evidence presented, the challenge will be valid. If not, the challenge will not proceed.
- If the challenge is approved to proceed, please post an IC thread in the Site of the Allmother board using the prefix Challenge. The Mythwriter account will respond with the Allmother's blessing, and with explanation and proof of the challenge's validity.
- Auditions will immediately be opened.
Reasons should be one of the following: a curse, a magic removed or given without consent, a companion revoked/killed/etc, an undesired companion given without consent, a murder, a magic denied, immortality revoked, a wrongly outcasted disciple, or a "belligerent abuse of power."
Remember, Guardians are servants of the People, and reasons should stem from violations of their responsibilities. Arguments or subjects of like/dislike are not viable reasons, and will not be counted.
*Guardian players, please bear in mind: there is no "plot armor" to protect reasons from being used against you. Regardless if a curse, nonconsensual magic, etc. was orchestrated out of character, the above are still able to be counted as reasons. CONSENT is defined, in this case, as character consent, not player consent.

There is a 2 month cooldown to challenges proposed from the date the challenge is deemed valid or invalid. This is to allot a Guardian with enough time to proceed with their ideas before a possible secondary challenge ensues.
To Guardian players or players plotting with Guardians at the time of a successful challenge, please bear in mind that challenges will not be put on pause for the sake of a work in progress plot. Events and quests that were pre-existing to the challenge will continue (with some assistance from squad, and on a case by case basis), but challenges will not be withheld for the sake of personal plots.
Our in-character rationale for this approach is the Allmother's concern for the wellbeing of her people. Although the character that petitions the Allmother needs no viable reason to initiate the challenge, the Allmother remains an all-seeing force. If her attention is drawn to the Guardians she has entrusted with the powers of her Crystals, and if she finds reason to unseat the Guardian in question, she will do so. Or, if not, she will leave them be.
Guardians are her servants, intended only to take care of her peoples, and the worry or intrigue of a disciple against a Guardian is reason enough for her to answer their prayers.
Challenges by Battle
Please note: Challenge by Battle applies only to Twilight.
Guardian of Twilight
Tenebrae
Cooldown Period: Available to be challenged on February 26th, 2023
Tenebrae
Cooldown Period: Available to be challenged on February 26th, 2023
The Guardian of Twilight is not reset every 6 months. As this role can be challenged for at any time at the end of a cooldown, and as these characters are not true vessels of the Guardian power, there is no definitive end to their terms sans the completion of a challenge, or their resignation.
In order to challenge for the position of Guardian of Twilight, characters must initiate a battle in the Site of the Allmother board using the prefix CHALLENGE. Afterward, they must tag the player of the present Guardian in the tagging channel on Discord. They must also tag the Squad group. You are not required to ask permission before initiating a challenge.
Challenges for the role of Guardian of Twilight are written as a physical altercation for the possession of the crystal shard that contains the Guardian's power. Utilizing character stats and dice rolls, our battle system must be used for these challenges to be valid.
Each character will have 3 attacks. Both the challenged and the challenger will have 72hrs to reply between each attack. Posting deadlines may be altered if the players come to a mutual agreement prior to the start of the challenge.
There is no post count requirement, no word count requirement, and no magic requirement to challenge for this role. Posts could only consist of a dice roll, if the challenger and challenged so agreed. However, these challenges must utilize our battle system.
The character with the highest HP value at the end of the fight is the victor. At the conclusion of a fight, the squad will review to ensure everything was done correctly before verifying the winner.
At the conclusion of the fight, the victor (be it the current Guardian or the newly instated Guardian) will have a 2 month cooldown before they are able to be challenged again.
Challenges by Vulnerability (Allmother)
Please bear in mind when considering these activity requirements: we ask only that a quest response be a 'yes/no' at minimum. We accept one-sentence quests, we accept Guardians simply giving away the requested magic or companion, and we also accept that you might need our help. Our activity guidelines are strict because our requirements are generous.
Guardians on Folklore are pivotal points of activity and involvement, and they have an expectation of replying to quests within 7 days of their posting. We work on a three-strike basis for activity.
If a Guardian fails to reply to 3 quests within the 7 days of their posting without first requesting a squad member's assistance (i.e, advising they will be out of town), that Guardian will be marked as Vulnerable, and staff will open auditions.
These 3 missed quests do not need to be concurrent.
Staff are not required to contact players prior to opening auditions in the event of vulnerability. Communication is imperative to keep our game functions running, and our activity requirements are itty bitty! So long as you ask us for help, we will not mark you as vulnerable. However, if you don't communicate with us, there isn't anything we can do to help. ):
Vulnerability lasts for a period of 7 days. During this time, auditions will be reopened for the Guardian position in question. The Guardian may elect to keep their name in the hat, or they may remove themselves from the running. In the event that the Guardian remains inactive, the default status results in an omission of the existing Guardian from the voting pool.
At the end of the 7-day period, voting will commence anonymously. The current Guardian, should they choose to run to maintain their position, will NOT be listed anonymously. Players may vote for an additional 3 days before polling is closed.
Challenges by Consent
Want to begin a Challenge by Consent? Awesome! Guardian players do not need to ask permission from staff, but we do ask that you keep us in the loop to help organize auditions and the aftermath. :)
If a Guardian player is no longer interested in fulfilling the role but neither wants to boringly step down, nor meet the requirements for challenge by vulnerability or disciple, they can choose to express a Challenge by Consent. This means that they are welcome to post in our 'plotting' channel in Discord and share their desire to have their Guardian challenged.
This does not require that any participating characters have a reason to try and unseat a Guardian. It also does not mean the challenging character will immediately receive the position of Guardian. However, this does mean that auditions will open at the conclusion of the member-led 'plot.'
The Guardian of Twilight is the only position of power on-site that may have its successor pre-planned using a Challenge of Consent. In the event that succession or usurpation is plotted OOCly, the new Guardian foregoes a period of invulnerability. Meaning: there will be no 2-month period of safety from challenges, and they will be immediately open to challenges.
The only requirement for a succession plot in regards to the Guardian of Twilight is that the squad be advised (whether publicly or privately), and that by no means may the Guardian of Twilight be passed between a pattern of players. (I.e, Joe passed to Karen, Karen passes to Larry, Larry passes to Joe, Joe passes to Karen, etc...)
In the event that a Challenge for the Guardian of Twilight has been posted, no other character may interfere until the original challenge has concluded and the new (or incumbent) Guardian of Twilight's renewed 2-month cooldown period has ended. Should the Guardian of Twilight decide they are open to Challenges by Consent prior to the end of this cooldown period, the Guardian's player must post their willingness to be challenged in the Discord's #plotting channel to make the information available to all interested players, as stated above.
